Polycarbonate Fabrication and Machining

    Home Polycarbonate Fabrication and Machining

    Polycarbonate Fabrication and Machining.

Polycarbonate is a pliable, transparent, virtually unbreakable plastic material that supplies project engineers with several desirable features that are superior to other types of plastics, particularly when a combination of strength and flame resistance is required:

    Mechanical Properties
    • Virtually unbreakable
    • Flame ratings from UL94 – HB to UL94 – V0.
    • Pliability
    • Chemical resistance
    • Optical clarity
    • Lightweight (half the weight of glass)
    • Various coatings to be applied by special request like static dissipative or scratch resistance
    Appearance
    • Superior glass-like transparency (similar to acrylic) although tinted or colored varieties are available
    • Scratch resistance coatings can help alleviate its tendency to scratch easily

As a result, polycarbonate offers the ideal material for machine guards, electrical installations, medical applications and other applications where a strong see-through material is needed.

Polycarbonate is offered in many grades:

    • Machine grade
    • UV Stabilized
    • General purpose
    • Flame-Inhibiting
    • Window Grade
    • Light diffusing
    • FDA compliant
    • Abrasion resistant
    • Sign Grade
    • Optical clarity

    Common Brands:

    • Lexan®
    • Tuffak®
    • Zelux®

    Sheet:

    • .030” to 2.5+” Thickness
    • Sheet sizes vary, but stock sizes are usually 24 x 48, 48 x 96, 60 x 96, 51 x 100

Polycarbonates are available in sheets, rolls, or tubes and can be machined by a skilled operator, using CNC machines. HP Manufacturing offers the capacity to form polycarbonate into complex geometries demanded by the medical imaging and equipment manufacturing industries.
